How to make (step-by-step)
Step 1: Mixing the ingredients
First, turn on the oven and preheat at 350°F or 180°C.
Place the butter and caster sugar into a mixing bowl and use low speed to mix until even. Then, change to medium speed and beat until light.
Next, add in the eggs, one at a time. Make sure to beat well after each time adding an egg until creamy. Always scrape down the sides so everything is mixed evenly.
Now add in the vanilla extract and mix well. Sift in the self-raising flour and mix with low speed. Again, scrape down the sides for even mixing.
Lastly, add the milk and mix it until well-combined.
Step 2: Making the marble
To prepare the cocoa paste, add the cocoa powder and hot water in a small bowl, and mix well.
Take out 1/4 portion of the cake mixture and add in the prepared cocoa paste.
Pour in the other 3/4 portion of the plain batter into an 8-inch lined and greased baking tin. Distribute the cake mixture evenly by shaking the baking tin lightly.
Using a spoon, spoon the cocoa batter on top of the plain batter. Next, I like to use a small knife and draw lines vertically to create the marble effect in the cake. You can repeat and make more lines to get a stronger marble effect.
Put it in the oven and bake at 350°F or 180°C for about 45 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave it aside to cool before serving.
